I had a mole removed that was benign but the pathologist suggested that the dermatologist take an additional, deeper sample...is this common?

Hello,
Usually deeper samples for moles are taken only when the mole is considered malignant or some dysplasia is suspected. You can get the mole sample histopathollogically examined and if there is a any dysplasia or atypical cells are found then treatment plan can be decided.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
