burning sensation in tongue

i have been suffering from burning sensation on my tongue for last 3 years...at first it started with small red dots on tip of my tongue...gradually it spreaded to my whole tongue......shape and size of the dots varies day by day...i hav seen a dermatologist and he told that am having a geographical tongue and its harmless......but i feel burning while eating food made of spices......i would like to know ,is geographical tongue painfull?or cause burning on the tongue?
