You might be able to get your GP to take a look even quicker. When I was tested, my GP did the initial test and then passed me onto the dermatologist after. Took 3 days after he took the sample to get the results back.
Moles & birthmarks are more susceptible to skin cancer, so you're doing the right thing to get it looked at with there being a change to it, but keep in mind, most of the time it winds up fine, so I wouldn't panic. I'm not a doctor, but it almost sounds like a bug bite or some rash being red and how fast it's changing.
