Central Sleep Apnea

Hi My young daughter was diagnosed with Central Sleep Apnea........ We  Have had her on Oxygen therapy, of which it helped to settle the apnea down some. She's still having episodes and at the moment theyre bad enough to fully wake her and she finds it difficult to settle back to sleep.... She is almost 7 and i am wondering  do you have any ideas to help her?

Central sleep apnea is unusual in young children, but it can occur. Did her sleep study show that she had obstructive episodes as well? What you're describing sounds more like obstructive sleep apnea. Sometimes, if you have both, treating the obstructive part can help the central apneas. Rarely, neurologic conditions can cause central sleep apnea, so maybe seeing a neurologist is an option later if her condition does not improve. Talk to your sleep doctor about it, as he or she knows all the details of the sleep study. Good luck.

There's a long list of medical conditions that's associated with central sleep apnea. In older adults, heart failure is the main one. That would be unusual at your daughter's age, but worth ruling out. There are also various neurologic conditions that can cause central sleep apnea as well. Talk to your sleep doctor and get a neurologist involved.
