acid reflux aspiration
I have had several episodes of waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air after the acid reflux has gone into my lungs.  it causes me to start coughing and sometimes vomiting.  it leaves a very painful and burning sensation in my lungs.

It seems to be happening more often and it doesn't matter when or what I eat.

Make sure you don't eat or drink alcohol within 3-4 hours of bed. If it continues, see a sleep doctor to make sure you don't have obstructive sleep apnea.
