12 YEAR GIRL W/TINGLY LEGS

Hello,
My 12 year old daughter is 5'8",s he is naturally very long and lean. Lately her legs are very tingly and wiggly, really bad at night. She said it feels like her legs are falling to sleep. She doesn't sleep well because of this problem.  I am very concerned this could be RLS. I do not have it but her grandmother does.

Could it be RLS? What can I do to help her?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Restless leg syndrome classically causes a feeling of discomfort of the legs, and causes the patient to move them frequently.
RLS is treated by iron supplements and dopamine-like drugs, The USA FDA has approved of Ropinirole and pramipexole for treating RLS.

Coming to your basic question - could your daughters symptoms be due to RLS, esp in view of a positive family history? Difficult to comment on this based on the limited history available. Almost half of RLS patients do have a family history of this disease. A detailed history and thorough neurological examination is required.

Legs "falling asleep" may be due to many causes - related to either the nerves or blood vessels.

Have a full iron panel run on her including ferritin.

Low iron levels are associated with RLS.  SInce she's 12 I'm figuring she has already begun her period so it's worth looking into.
