A sleepy tired woman trying to get back on track.

I am a healthy woman in my late 20's. I work the midnight shift at a hotel. It’s an easy simple job; a little too easy for my taste. However, when I sleep during the day I find myself not getting the quality I need. Therefore I want to sleep longer and it doesn’t do me any good.

When I first took this position (working the midnight shift) I used to be energetic and I worked out every (almost every) morning before I went to bed. Three months in the job I have found myself to be more moody, sleepy, and unmotivated.

My husband and I have also decided to try to conceive. So, I am off of the birth control pills for the first time in 10 plus years. I stopped taking them late September and I have noticed my sleepiness had started after I stopped taking the pill. Is it possible it is connected? My body is changing so much that it doesn’t know what to do? How can get the quality of sleep back and be more motivated?

Hi,
How are you? Getting off the pill may lead to hormonal changes which may also be a factor in your moodiness and sleep problem. This usually resolves after your hormones   have normalized. If there are other symptoms present and if it persists, have this checked for further evaluation. Take care and do keep us posted.

I don't think stopping the pill makes you unusually tired (being tired is one of the symptom for being on the pill), but I doknow that getting pregnant can in some people. I fell asleep in the most unusual places and was really tired  before I even knew I was pregnant.

RE: improving quality of sleep when working the night shift... I don't' have any suggestions. It is a fight against nature to try to modify your natural sleep cycle.
