Ambien versus temazepam

Does anyone have any information or experience regarding using ambien versus temazepam? I've been taking ambien for 60 days, and my Dr. today gave me a prescription for temazepam 15mg as an alternative to ambien. He said it should give me a few more hours of sleep. Ambien right now is good for about 5 hours of dead-to-the-world sleep, followed by a few hours of in-and-out sleep. Not very satisfying. Besides, I've taken it longer than I really wanted to. I'm not sure if temazepam is better, the same, or if I'm going from the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. Any information/comments would be appreciated.

I have been on, seroquel, lunesta, trazadone, sonata and ambien by itself. The one thing that finally worked is 10mg of ambien and 30mg of temazepam. However in addition I take topamax and vistaril. But the ambien/restoril concoction works better than anything for me I am also 6 foot 4 and 210 pounds so mg may change as well as how meds react to everyones body/genetics. But this is what works for me

I found that with Ambien not only do I sleep walk, I sleep drive and that's no joke. 30 mg Restoril takes way to Long to activate, I went to my doc and asked for an old one and that is Placidyl 1000th it used to come in 500mg but no more. Placidyl will knock u out and keep u out. The trick that I use n is I poke a needle thru the tip because the Med is liquid inside a cap. By using the pin pick the med comes out n will drop u in 10 mins max.and will keep u out a good y to 7 hours with no hang over effect!!

Temazapan gives you a immediate sleep but then you wake up. If you want a good 8-12 hrs sleep try seraquel. They tried to prescribe me this for every day anxiet but one knocked me out

If you want a knockout good sleep try seraquel. Temazapan is ok but this will give you a solid 10-12 hrs sleep

It is good to hear that someone had a good experience with Temazepam.  I have a prescription for 30 mg. as well.  Sleep good with it.  I've used Ambien and also Lunesta.  They put me to sleep but I wake up after 4-5 hrs.  My doctor increased my mg on the Lunesta from 2 mg to 3 mg (he didn't want to at first) but I still didn't get the results of staying asleep.  I know the Temazepam (Restoril) is a benzodiazepine and I've been tapering off Ativan, which is in the same family.  So that's why I worry about Ativan and the Tenazepam.  Both are Benzo's.  I don't hear as many bad things about coming off Ativan or Lunestra as I do on Restoril and Ativan.  I see my doc on Jan. 19th and I've got a few questions about this to ask him.

So you said you had taken Temazepam on and off for a few years . .  .but that your doc was weaning you off in 4 weeks?  Sorry, I'm a little confused?  I have Temazepam but since it's Benzo, I'm wondering about taking it.  I'm already trying to come off Ativan.

I have experienced insomnia for about 25 years and a doctor friend of mine prescribed Temazepam which he said has no known side effects. He gave me a prescription for 30 mg capsules which are not much more expensive than the 15 mg. I was buying them at Costco for about $.25/cap. I would open the capsule up and dump about ½ of the powder in my mouth, put the cap back on and use the other half the next night. Eventually I was able to get seven hours of sound sleep on ¼ to 1/3 of the capsule. I recently moved over seas and have a difficult time obtaining them and take whatever I'm able to get here. My point is that I am now 72 and have been taking them for over 20 years without any side effects that I'm aware of...wake up feeling rested and immediately start doing 100 sit-ups, 30 push-ups, plus other exercises. I am a private pilot and still retain my FAA physical. I still feel great and will continue taking Temazepam whenever I can buy it...my favorite sleep med. I have used Ambien; however, I don't do nearly as well on it...less sleep and morning hangover. Obviously, not everyone will experience the same results.

I've used Tepmazapan off and on over the past few years. It is absolutely the best sleep med for me. Without med, I get to sleep[ just fine, then wake up 3-4 hours later and am up for hours. Temazapan guarantees me an 8 hour sleep, without hangover. My limited experience with Ambien was, as others have said, not enduring. Its good for getting asleep (which I have no problem with) but doesn't sustain (which is what I need). BUT I am very cautious about the addictive element of T, and my doc and I agreed only twice a week, and hopefully stop after about 4 weeks. So it's great for a short term situational insomnia, I wouldn't recommend for long use over time. Good luck!

I have been on ambien on and off for years.  It seems to be the only thing that works for me.  Except I only sleep a couple hours and have to take another pill of 5mg. So that I can sleep a couple more hours.  I'm up to 15 mg each night. I run out of my prescription and have days before I can get my script filled. So I suffer those days with out ambien.  Anyone take more then a 15 mg dose? My doctor is trying to help my problem with insomia and thinking I have anxitey depression.  Tried 3 different meds for this so far. Amitriptoline, Effexor, and now Paxil.  These are all horrible meds.  Seems to make the insomia worse.

Ive been taking Ambien CR and still have problems falling asleep. I usually go to bed around 10-11 with it and wake up around 3 then go back to sleep until 430-500. I need more than that so I was thinking about taking the temazpam with the Ambien CR right before bed. I will see how it effects me before getting into bed first. Should be interesting and hoping I dont feel "hung over" in the morning., Please anyone else that folllows this routine let me know your results or if i can be doing something better.. Thanks!

I like Tamazepam much better than Ambien.   I have been taking Tamazepam for 1 year.  I took Ambien off and on for 10 years ....I was sleepwalking and doing all kinds of crazy things on Ambien anytime I used it for long term use.

Both make me hungry.  On Ambien, I would get up and eat in my sleep.  At least with Tamazepam, I remember eating a snack before bed.

I have been taking temazepam for about 2 weeks now and previously I was taking ambien for about 6 months so I feel that I can speak for the efficacy of both. Personally I prefer ambien; I think that it has a stronger bang whereas temazepam is almost like taking a muscle relaxer its effects are gentle and relaxing whereas the effect of ambien is a hypnotic.

I don't know what your situation is, but a lot of times if you can't afford your medications you can write the company and they will help.  It's worth a try, I do know of people that get their medications free from the drug company once they wrote them a letter, you might see if there's some kind of form you can submit on the net.

Good luck.

Ambien CR costs $200 versus $6 for the regular stuff. We did talk about it, and I wanted it, but at $200 a month it just ain't gonna happen. So I'm sticking with the Ambien for now. I don't really want to take higher dosages of temazepam. And like you say, getting off of ambien isn't that difficult, just a bit time consuming as you ramp down the dosage.

try blink health got my ambien that would have been 200$ for 64$
If it wasnt for that I guess I would have waited til i passed out somewhere from sleep deprivation because that way too much money to come out of pocket

I take both together, but why didn't your doctor give you Ambien CR?  It's control released so it keeps you sleeping all through the night.

I do know that it's easier to get "off" Ambien than temazepam because it's in the class as Ativan which is very addictive.  Other than that, I don't know much about it, but I do know that if you have sleep apnea, my sleep doctor would rather I take Ambien than temazepam because of the respiratory suppression.  Tell him you want Ambien CR.

So I went ahead and and tried the temazepam last night. And it was a horrid night! I was awake every hour on the hour. 2am and I'm wide awake. I think I can tolerate the ambien for another month or two - the temazepam just didn't work as well, plus I think it is a lot more addictive than ambien at the higher dosage it would take to knock me out.
