Can't sleep even with drugs

by jojo24, Sep 13, 2009 12:00PM
Hi.  I have literally had insomnia my entire life.  My mom said that when I was a baby she would fall asleep waiting for me to fall asleep and would wake up and I would just be staring at her.  She tried everything from herbal tea, warm milk, and when I got older, she got me some over the counter melatonin.  It didn't work and if it did, it was temporary.  The only time I was ever able to sleep without some sort of sleep aid was when I was in the military working 16 hour days and sleeping for about 5 hours each night.  But that was too much for me, and I can't do that anymore due to other medical issues.  Anyhoo, I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder, depression, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, did I mention insomnia?  Right now, I am seeing a psychiatrist and he has prescribed me with Valium and Remeron to try and help me sleep and to help with the anxiety and depression.  Those worked but made me sleep all day to the point where I couldn't hear my alarm clock going off or my phone ringing and I would sleep for 12-14 hours straight.  He then took me off of the Valium and replaced it with Ambien.  The first few weeks I was taking Ambien, I would sleep until it wore off (between 5-6 hours) and I would be awake for the entire day until it was time to go back to bed.  But the anxiety came back really bad so he switched me back.  Then I went to sleeping all day.  Then I went to not sleeping at all.  I will take more Valium to get to sleep and it won't help me any or if it does I sleep until 5pm.  So, now I'm back on Ambien and it's not helping me sleep at all and when it does (and that's if I take two or three) I sleep all day... again!  I don't know what to do.  I've been given a list multiple times as to how to get to sleep.  I've tried everything non-prescription.  I've tried the herbals, the warm milk, the no caffeine, no smoking, using the bed for only sleep and sex, meditation, reading, all of that ****, to no avail.  I don't know what to do.  I took two Ambien last night and I am still awake.  Not energetic awake though, just awake.  I feel like ****.  I'm tired and I want to go to sleep, but I don't want to go to sleep in the middle of the day.  I just want to go to bed and sleep like a normal person and be able to wake up like a normal person.  Can anyone help me?
