Dreams affecting memory

by dreamy68, May 12, 2008 05:03PM
Since January I have been experiencing very vivid dreams, typically involving daily tasks- namely school assignments and simple work tasks I'd planned like telephoning someone for work-related issues or finances, etc. The problem is (aside from the boring, mundane content of these dreams) they would convince me I'd completed these tasks when conscious. I've had trouble differentiating between what I have done and what I haven't, what I've actually told someone and what I haven't, based on these dreams.  I found this funny at first, until it started affecting my schoolwork- I would dream I completed a homework assignment and then find- once past due- I hadn't done it at all! While I'm sure the stress of college, varied sleep patterns, and depression are the root of the problem (I've been on 20 mg of Prozac since last October), I'm not sure if this is a particular disorder with treatment.

Hi dreamy68, how are you doing? Are you able to have a undisturbed sleep or these vivid dreams wakes you up frequently? It seems you are under a lot of stress either due to your studies or for personal reasons which is triggering the dreams because you may be thinking lot many times. Are you exams nearing? What is your usual sleep cycle? Try to relax and do morning-evening walk, regular exercise and go to bed as early as possible. Avoid excessive smoking, alcohol and coffee/tea. It is better to consult a sleep specialist and undergo a sleep study. Take care and update on your progress.

hi dreamy, i get exactly the same thing and i've never been able to work out why. during all the times that ive experienced this, i havent been under stress, taking medication and i dont suffer from sleep deprivation.
sometimes, i confuse dreams as being memories, and also confuse memories as being dreams. each time this happens they vary in severity, such as i'll think that a conversation has taken place (when it hasnt) or sometimes i'll think that full on events have taken place (when they havent), or vice versa.
