I think good eating practice with the possible help of a sedative (maybe just melatonin). Will help. Stay away from caffeine in all forms best if you just go "cold turkey" on that, if you can't then none after 12 noon.
Consider you sleeping environment, quiet, dark, comfortable ... pillow, sleepware, temperature... bla bla.. just a steam as it occurs to me.
I do not recommend prescription sleeping pills, but your doctor can prescribe other sedatives that are not as risky as sleeping pills.
Ask your doctor about having a sleep study done. Usually they're done to diagnose sleep apnea but if you're having major trouble sleeping as you say, they may be able to figure out what's going wrong. Also, watch what you eat and drink before bedtime. I hope that helps.
