I wake myself up just as I start to doze off

Hello. I developed a very strange sleep problem and it's keeping me from sleeping all night. The moment I doze off to sleep, my throat produces a small sound (imagine a deep "mmm" kind of sound) that immediately wakes me up. I try to go back to sleep and the same thing happens through the night! I first experienced a few episodes of this a few months ago, but they were sporadic, happening maybe 2 or 3 times a night, and they tended to happen while I was already asleep, not at the point of dozing off. That's the key difference: right now, the moment I doze off, I wake up again. It's happened for 2 nights. It's almost like my brain's been reconfigured to activate the sound right when I'm falling asleep. I'm worried and frustrated. Please help. (I should also add that I have been sick for about a week, and have been on some OTC medication - could that be the reason). Thanks.

i have the same thing.  It's normally brought on after a heavy drinking session or if i'm having anxiety issues that week.  Its less of a breathing thing and more to do with the heart feeling like it momentarily stops.  And that you can have to wake up otherwise you may die?  thats what its like for me anyway

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi, your symptoms are suggestive of sleep apnea. The possibilities for such condition are Medical, neurological, or dental conditions that reduce upper airway size, is known to cause sleep apnea.  Esp. in cases of obesity or recent weight gain can cause laxity of tissues of airway leading to development of sound during breathing. This condition needs to be differentiated from asthma.

You need to undergo certain tests like polysomnyography (PSG) which will monitor the sleep and will evaluate the breathing patterns. Chest radiography, electrocardiography, and echocardiography is also important to rule out underlying cardiac or pulmonary causes.

Initial measures include avoidance of allergen exposure if present, weight reduction if obese, Supplemental oxygen, Corticosteroids and Antibiotic therapy if infection is present.

I suggest you to consult sleep specialist. Take care and regards.
