I'm not sure what you mean by "drugs" but while I have chronic (every night and usually several) trouble mares I don't find them any worse if I take a prescription sleeping pill. I have used a number of over the counter melatonin-based aids and none have done much I can detect relative to sleeping or dreaming.
If you are having problems with nightmares (scary threatening stuff) you should try to come to terms with it. If you are taking "drugs" and then have nightmares you should stop the drugs - prescription or otherwise.
