MSLT results

I had a polysomnography Sunday night and the MSLT yesterday, and it's driving me crazy that I won't know the results for 2 weeks. I was really shocked by the MSLT--I never thought I'd be able to sleep, but I fell asleep during all 5 naps! It didn't take me long to do so, and I'm pretty sure I dreamt during most of the naps...obviously the docs need to read the results and confirm that. But my question right now is whether it's ever normal to fall asleep during all 5 of the naps. Surely that in itself is a sign there's a problem?

Thank you both! I did sleep oddly well (or better than I thought I would, given the circumstances) during the PSG. I suspected I'd sleep during the first two naps, since the tech had to wake me up at 7—an hour I'd NEVER wake up at naturally. But at all 5 naps? Whoa. And then I slept for 12 hours when I got home that night. I was really shocked—which is why I'm dying for an answer soon! I've been so exhausted for the past 4 years and no one's been able to figure out why. Thanks again!

A MSLT should follow an over-night PSG ; you must have at least 6 hours of sleep prior to MSLT. If you do not have any co-morbid sleep disorders to concern about, then falling asleep during all 5 naps is suggestive of hypersomnia or narcolepsy ( if your test showed REM in two or naps) both in which are treating with meds.

I have had 3 MSLT tests. Fell asleep in all the naps too. Just meant I was very very sleep deprived. I have sleep apnea and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, and between the two of them, sleep was just wishful thinking for me. Treating the sleep apnea really helped, and when the limb movements aren't acting up, I'm much better. Not sure of the specifics, but there is a criteria of sleep that must be met the night before a MSLT before it's results are trustworthy. Hope your results give you the answers you need to resolve your sleep issues.
