Night Terrors

My personal definition of a night terror is when you wake up and you are paralyzed. I've had them all of my life but recently they have gotten more frequent and worse. I have had a few when I'm still dreaming and dream that I finally get out of bed but its only a dream and I'm snapped back into the same position. But most of my night terrors consist of waking up and even being able to hear things around smell them everything, I just cannot move. I immediately start breathing heavy to try to wake me up but this time I didn't. In fact it got to the point where I could barely breathe or swallow. I woke up for a short second but I was so exhausted I fell right back asleep and went through it again! When I finally did wake up I was soar and sweaty, my throat was dry. I think the reason this one was worse then ones I've had in the past is because in the middle of this one I realized I didn't set my alarm for work and I panicked about it and fought harder then I usually do to get out of the night terror state. I would really like to get rid of this issue. Is there ANYthing I can do?

Hi, it can be a manifestation of type of sleep disorder like parasomnias, wherein the certain events occur without the knowledge of the person. This can be a manifestation due to the environment you are staying in, like stressed life, maintaining  strict timeliness and fear of being getting late for work etc. You need to take out your stress, as it will effect your mental functions.

Few of the individuals are known to suffer from parasomnias esp. when they are on non-benzodiazepine sedaives, drug abuse etc. otherwise no definitive cause exists in few individuals apart from stress, positive past history of abuse etc.

The associated symptoms with the following disorder are confusional wakefullness, sleep paralysis, nightmares and night terrors. This can occur in any sleep stage (REM and non-REM stage) .

To rule out parasomnias you need to undergo Polysomnyography and sleep analysis. You need to take out time for further evaluation. Sleep with light on. Short term benzodiazepine against prescription will help you. Go for mental realaxation exercises which will help you alleviate the stress. I suggest you to consult physician or sleep specialist. Take care and regards.
