Over Sleeping

Hey my name is Adam and im 18 years old.. im new to this site but for the longest time i have had very weird sleeping habits, i can easily stay awake for two days and have it be that big of a deal for me, and its starting to interfere with my life, work, girlfriend  and many other things..  when i sleep i can easily sleep for 12+ hours. if i wake up say after a normal length sleep i have a very hard time getting up and not going back to sleep, i always wake up feeling worse then i did when i fell asleep, and when i over sleep i wake up with horrible headaches and they can last on and off for a day or two depending on how i sleep if i dont have tylenol.. anyway if you have any suggestions on how i could get back on normal sleeping patterns.. or avoid headaches. im not lazy or anything.. i have very loud speakers on my pc and if i set an alarm i just wont wake up. its beggining to really effect my life. any help would be awesome. thanks in advance.

You could benefit from seeing a sleep doctor and getting a sleep study. Sometimes practicing good sleep hygiene can be enough, but you could actually have a sleep disorder. Your headaches could be related. Until getting a sleep study, google sleep hygiene and put some of the tips into practice.

One more thing, with young people, docs sometimes go straight to wanting to attribute it to lifestyle or even a psych issue. I would recommend if that happens to you that you be your own advocate and request a diagnosis not be assumed without formal testing. Just my "voice of experience".

Hi Shornys, you seem to be having good sleep if you are following the same cycle all the days. You need to say if are having sleep in daytime also. How many hours you used to sleep early and what was your routine. Obstructive sleep apnea could be a reason for you to wake up frequently in order to regain your breath—sometimes resulting in number of awakenings per night, many times you may not even be aware of it ending up having excessive daytime sleep because of fatigue, feeling unrefreshed after sleeping, and daytime sleep attacks at your workplace. Added to all these stress you are going through can be a trigger. Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant used for the treatment of narcolepsy. It is also used for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome and shift-work sleep disorder. It would be better to consult a sleep doctor and ask for sleep test before you chose to take any drug. Keep updating your thoughts in this section. Take care.
