Possible sleep disorder? Very fatigued

by gromit12, Oct 27, 2007 11:49PM
Unexplained symptoms when I’m fatigued, tired, or waking up. Clumsiness, can’t get a good grip/drop things, (it’s like my hands have a mind of their own/ some kind of disconnect), memory/concentration problems (brain fog), unrefreshing sleep, very fatigued, no energy. Waking up is very difficult which didn’t used to be. I’ve had migraines since childhood but they’ve gotten worse & are now happening more often & lasting 2 or 3 days, used to go away after good night’s sleep. Painful throbbing on the right side of my head behind my eye. I wake up w/the pain. I vomit & am sensitive to sudden movement/light/smells/sound. I was taking Maxalt but it stopped working. I’ve recently started on Propranolol & Relpax  which has worked for the past few migraines. I take no other medications. I go to bed at 9 or 10 & get up at 5:30. I sleep in until about 7 on the weekends. I used to have some insomnia but this hardly happens now. I’m so tired I usually fall right asleep & don’t wake up in the middle of the night. My maternal grandmother had chronic progressive MS. I had several tests all negative: MRI, VEP, blood tests, thyroid, EEG. Nocturnal Polysomnogram: Sleep efficiency was 69.1% Stage 1 sleep 7.1% Stage 2 sleep 55.3% Stage 3 sleep 8.7% Stage 4 sleep 0% REM sleep 28.9% Total sleep time 329 minutes Non REM sleep was 240.5 minutes REM sleep time was 95 minutes Latency to persistent sleep was 17 minutes  Latency to REM sleep was 162 minutes.  I’m 43 female, & don’t smoke/drink. Don’t drink coffee & have cut back on caffeine. Would a sleep disorder be causing my symptoms?

It sounds like you have ocular migraines.  I would cut caffeine out completely.  I suspect if you get your migraines under control with better prophilactic medication such as with adequate doses of propranolol or other preventative drugs, you may not need relpax as often, and would be less tired.  Go talk to your doc.
