Rapid side to side eye movements when I close my eyes. Also change of vision.

Hello, I am currently a medical student and am experiencing eye problems. I have had trouble sleeping for about a month and half and I realized there is a problem with my eyes. Whenever I close my eyes, I have rapid side to side involuntarily eye movements, however when my eyes are open these side to side movements go away. I feel like there is a problem with my lateral/medial rectus muscles acting this way. It feels like they become overstimulated when I close my eyes. It takes me a long time to fall asleep because of this and when I wake up the next morning I feel ultra exhausted because I feel like I haven't gotten enough sleep. I do not know why my eyes move side to side when I close them. They are no movements when my eyelids are open but the side to side movements occur once my eyes close. It has been like this for about a month and a half now and I am also experiencing a change of vision. I went to both my family physician and optometrist and both have told me that it might be a neurological disorder or problem.

Hi, my son gets this regularly.  It is very common in people with vestibular migraine and vertigo disorders.  Noone seems to know exactly what it is but it is very common amongst people that I have spoken with about this issue.

I also experience the same problem with my eyes having rapid movement when my eyes are closed.  I also have pain in my left ear( not a ear infection) and when I touch my temple slitly i feel movement in my left ear. I had two MRI'S and both came back negative. I  also have pressure in my head and vertigo. I am seeing another neurologist in December and hope they figure out what's wrong.

I get this problem often enough that I worry about it sometimes, but not so often that I've forked out the huge lump of money that I'd have to to get an appointment with my optometrist.  I'm also experiencing a change of vision (which is totally normal for my age and family history).  I thought it was the rapid eye movement of the REM cycle coming too soon and distracting me.  When it happens it's REALLY annoying and stops me from sleeping, but luckily it doesn't happen too often, only when I read or watch TV more than usual.  So far nothing bad has happened, and it's been happening over about 5 years now.
I've had an EEG (for completely different reasons) and my brainwaves were 'mildly abnormal' but I can't get an MRI for at least another year to find out what that might mean.  Doctors reckon I'm developing either bipolar or schizophrenia; have had mood/psychotic/dissociative/anxiety symptoms for up to 5 years, about the same time as the eye movements.  But when they started, it was just severe depression that was the problem, nothing florid.
So that probably doesn't answer any of your questions, but I hope it helps some.
