Sleeping in your own bed.

Since my insomnia has developed I've read all about making your bedroom sleep friendly.  One thing that's causing me problems is the whole "don't use your bed for anything but sleep" rule.  I live with another person so my bedroom is my home within my home.  I do everything in that bed, watch tv, surf the net, read books.  If I were to only use it for sleeping, it would be like I'd be evicting myself from my home. I wouldn't know where to go.  Has anyone with sleep issues managed to keep their bed multi-purpose, or is this "only for sleeping" thing an ironclad rule?

I've had insomnia on and off for 13 years and my bed is multi-purpose as well. The most important thing to do with insomnia is to get yourself very relaxed before laying down. Take a hot bath or shower, lay down and read, listen to soothing music. I take ambien and sometimes benedryl to help me fall asleep. I don't think its necessary to only use your bed for sleep when dealing with insomnia. Try different things until you find what works best for you. Dont let insomnia take over your life. Talk to your doctor about sleep meds as well. Hope you can figure out what works best for you and get some rest.

It's your bed, do whatever you like in it. Being concerned about 'rules' of sleep's a sure way to prevent it. Accept that every night won't be perfect, but you won't die if you break the 'rules'. Do your thing, forget sleep & it will soon be OK. Best wishes.
