Strange sensation

Hi, I've been under a lot of stress lately with various health worries. Had a benign thyroid nodule removed earlier in the year but didn't know it was benign until removed and had 6 months of worry wait for tests,op and results. Had problems with my neck and throat ever since. Put on 100 mcg of thyroxine plus I'm taking medication for high BP and cholesterol. On top of everything I'm going through the menopause. Been having bad heartburn on and off for months but currently not too bad at the moment but do get a burning in the throat. Going for a barium swallow on Friday. Never seem to have a full nights sleep and now getting very strange sensations whilst asleep but strangely I'm aware of them. It's not painful just very unpleasant. I feel warm on the outside but cold internally and get this strange feeling which is very hard to describe but it feels like when you see a horror movie and you get goose bumps but this is internally, it doesn't last long but it's not a nice feeling. Feeling stupid trying to explain it to a medical person because I'm not too good at putting things into words at times especially trying to explain odd sensations. Maybe it's stress because I'm worrying about my throat and neck and what's causing all the problems. Has anyone else ever experienced this sort of weird sensation? and what's the cause. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hello Dr.Bhumika, had follow up appointment only this morning and learnt that my barium swallow was fine, no obstructions. No hiatus hernia or pouch. Have had very little heartburn for the last few months. Consultant arranging for me to have C,T,scan on clivicle area to check for any problems because of consistent discomfort accross chest plus having pain in both shoulders. Still experiencing strange sensations but have noticed they tend to be more frequent when I'm in bed.Now just waiting for appointment for C.T. scan.

Hi,
So what does the barium swallow report say?
Have you taken some anti nausea and anti reflux medication? Do they help with your symptoms?
You could start daily exercises and regular walks for losing weight. A healthy diet plan with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is important. Try to avoid processed, fried, oily and spicy food as that would aggravate your symptoms and also cause weight gain.
Good luck.

Hi Dr.Bhumika, thanks for your advice and suggestions. I don't smoke or drink but I'm a little overweight but trying to lose weight but difficult due to thyroxine and menopause. Had the barium swallow now just waiting for results. Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
You should try a combination of emoprazole or rabeprazole 40 mg with domperiidone daily half hour before breakfast. That should help. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Also sleep with your head end elevated. Goodluck with the barium swallow. Get a copy of the report from your doctor.

Hello Doctor, I take 160mg of Diovan(Valsartan) daily, 25mg Atenolol, Navidrex (Cyclopenthiazide) 0.5mg daily for my BP (have been on medication since I was 29). 10mg Lipitor (atorvastation calcium) for cholesterol and 100mcg Thyroxine. I've also been prescribed 20mg omeprazole for acidity but find they don't help too much. I'm due to have a barium swallow tomorrow afternoon. Thankfully, the heartburn hasn't been too bad just lately but I'm having an awful lot of discomfort with my neck which has increased after my thyroid op but don't know if that's just coincidence. My thyroid blood results came back yesterday and they were fine. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi,
It could also be a side effect of the medication you are taking now. What anti hypertensive medication are you taking? And what medication are you taking for your cholesterol? To avoid the heratburn try some OTC antacid preparations. You could ask your doctor for a prescription. Get your thyroid function checked every 6 months. Goodluck.

Hi,
I understand that you are going through a lot.
Is your blood pressure adequately controlled?
You can avoid heart burn by eating a small dinner atleast two hrs before bedtime, sleeping propprd up on a pillow, eating good amounts of fresh geen vegetables and fruits and regular exercise.
The sensation that you are feeling could be because of heartburn or thyroid insufficiency. You may undergo thyroid function tests again just to make sure that you do not have an insufficiency. Meanwhile relax...hope this helps you!
