Too much watery saliva produced...

For as long as I can remember about once every six months or so I'll have problems sleeping because I produce excess watery saliva.  It'll get to the point where I'll be producing so much that my stomach will start to hurt due to swallowing too much saliva, my throat will hurt, and I can't sleep because I keep having to spit out my saliva every 10 seconds.

It's sort of hard to explain, but it's really annoying because it will happen at random times for apparently no reason at all.  Every time this happens I know I won't be getting any sleep that night.  It's currently 5:50 and I have been up for an hour and thirty minutes spitting out saliva because I can't get back to sleep.  My stomach and throat hurts and I'm currently filling up a water bottle with saliva because I can't bear to swallow it any more.

I'm a healthy, active, 20 year old who doesn't take any medications.  I do not smoke, dip, or partake in any unhealthy habits.

Advice would be amazing.  I'm so tired of having this problem and after scouring the internet and finding nothing on it, I decided to finally post something.

Is there any way to stop saliva production or slow it down during these nights?  Perhaps by eating something?

Hi,
How are you? Saliva is produced in and secreted from the salivary glands in the body and functions to initiate digestion. The secretion of saliva is under the control of the autonomic nervous system. Hypersalivation, or increased saliva, can be caused by overproduction or decreased clearance of saliva.

Causes of saliva overproduction include pregnancy, excessive starch intake, gastroesophageal reflux disease, pancreatitis, liver disease, serotonin syndrome, oral ulcers, and oral infections. Medications that can cause saliva overproduction include clozapine, pilocarpine, ketamine, and potassium chlorate. Toxins can also cause hypersalivation. These include mercury, copper, organophosphates, and arsenic.

Causes of hypersalivation due to decreased clearance of saliva include infections such as tonsillitis, retropharyngeal and peritonsillar abscesses, epiglottitis, and mumps. It can also be caused by problems with the jaw such as fracture or dislocation; radiation therapy; and neurologic disorders such as myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease, rabies, bulbar paralysis, bilateral facial nerve palsy, and hypoglossal nerve palsy.

Treatment of hypersalivation should be directed toward the underlying cause. Some patients find relief with use of mouthwash and tooth brushing, which might have a drying effect.
Best.

I suffer from the same problem.  It only happens when i become aware of it and don't trick my mind from thinking about it quick enough.  It turns into one swallow to clear the spit from my mouth then another.  Then another and all of a sudden I can't stop teh flow or focus on anything else but it.

It's extremely frustrating especially when I'm trying to get a good nights rest before I* go to work.  I really don't want to be tired again tommorrow. UGH!  For the record I have OCD or something like it as well.  I obsess over thoughts, issues or things that happen really easily and sometimes they stick the same way salivating does.

After much thought I believe the answer to all these issues is probably gonna be medication for anxiety or ocd.  I took Bupropren before(i think that's what it's called) and my lfie was great.  I stopped taking it, and life was good for a while then I slowly drifted back intot he same thought habits.

My advice for myself and others is this:  Go see a doctor and explain this thoroughly.  Try meds and if they don't work try something else.  My doctor is out of town or I would have already been back on them.  Trying to find a family doctor in the town I live in now is next to impossible!

UGH!.  well good luck everyone.  there's got to be a solution for lifes issues we just gotta find it.

I have this problem as well. I do not have any health issues that may account for the excessive saliva production while I sleep. I read somewhere (http://www.ehow.com/how_7606997_prevent-drooling-sleeping.html) that I should try sleeping on my back. I did, and it has stopped the excessive saliva. Apparently when you sleep on your back as opposed to on your sides, it enables your body to swallow the saliva that the body naturally creates. Someone also suggested trying Breathe Right Strips which I will be attempting tonight. I hope this helps. It's been a problem for me for many years now, and I'm glad to have some solutions on my hand.

If you have a problem with excess saliva you can try a medication which switches it off. In Australia the medication is call ATROPINE 4% . It is an anti muscarinic medication. It is an eye drop. A side effect is that is reduced saliva--
Directions for use: Instill one drop under the tongue when required. It is highly effective. You will need a doctor to prescribe. Best of luck to all of you

I seem to produce excess saliva when I eat or drink anything, including water, but only at home.  When this starts, I need to get several paper towels and just keep coughing up into the towels. Sometimes I cough so hard, I involuntarily throw up.  I do have six dogs in the house and one cat.  When I eat out, I don't have this problem. Also, it seems much worse at certain times of the year.  I live in the Atlanta, GA, area.  I notice that when I have to go on a hill in my back yard which has a lot of trees and shrubs, I seem to get an attack.  I don't think this is from GERD.  It could be Candida. Right now, I'm physically exhausted from coughing clear saliva up all day and last night.  God help us all.  By the way, I'm almost 65 and I have had this problem for years, but only in GA., not Chicago where I used to live.  Again, this happens primarily in Fall and Winter and only when I'm home.

well, evidently the problem has been around for a long while and no appropriate solution has been found yet anywhere on the internet. i'd love to see someone provide information on how to lose it, instead of scientific terms and how it is caused. i'm a 20 yr old guy having this trouble all the day resulting in leaving out droplets of saliva everywhere. i desperately need help. its an emergency.

This always works for me but I don't know it it will work for anyone else but I guess it couldn't hurt to put it out there to see if it could help. Like alot of the above comments I have found myself multiple times awoken or unable to sleep due to excess saliva being produced. I jumped out of bed and ate breakfast. Specifically frosties cereal will long life milk. After the bowl I was completely fine. Yes. Very weird but works everytime for me. I hope this helps someone else.

For most of you with lots of saliva at night (while lying down), the cause is probably from acid reflux.  Lying flat makes it easier for acid from your stomach to travel up into the esophagus.  Any irritation to the esophagus (from acid hitting the inside of it) will stimulate more saliva since it has lots of different ingredients, including a protective ingredient that can help decrease inflammation.  That's why most of you complain of more saliva at night time, but it can also happen during the day if you eat certain foods (spicy foods, tomatoes, mint, chocolate, alcohol), if you are a smoker, or if you are overweight.

Eating something doesn't necessary cure this problem as some have said about eating cereal or brushing their teeth.  It's probably improved because you are sitting upright and that makes it harder for the acid to reach the esophagus.  But, it also may be that the saliva now is being used up to digest the food you have just eaten.

There are medications to decrease the amount of saliva made (i.e. atropine, scopalamine), but these have a lot of side effects.  Lots of saliva itself is not life threatening if you are still able to swallow fine.  It becomes a problem if you have other medical issues that make swallowing difficult.  Still, you should see your doctor to help manage the cause of the saliva.

To start with try cutting down on eating spicy foods, tomato products, mint, chocolate, alcohol, and smoking - especially a few hours before sleeping.  Also, you can raise the head of your bed with blocks to about a 45 degree angle, which will help keep acid from entering the esophagus.  You might want to try over the counter antacids, or Zantac before bedtime to help with the reflux symptoms.  These are a good start, but ask your doctor what medication would be best for you.  Try to pay attention to what you eat that makes it worse, what other symptoms you are having, and time of day so you can help your doctor sort out what is going on.  Good luck!

MEDITATION properly done can help in many conditions with no known medication,,

DO it now;

* sit quietly and breath deep once or twice
* breath as normaly while doing a brief awareness meditation (bringing attention to yourself) saying
"This is very much ME here!" (feel it) about 3 times
* Next imagine your producing half the saliva (imagine it)
Meditate on half the saliva you produce by making about 10 hits on it
(a hit is a strong imagination, usually takes less than a second)

Repeat this meditation procedure once a day at a comfortable time

Thats it and good luck!!!

NB. this mediation can help with other problems in,,
please meditate only on WHAT YOU WANT, thats is. "HALF the saliva" if thats what you want..and not "no more too much saliva"...!!

I have the same problem. I tried the cereal with milk. It helped a little. Finally I rolled a paper towel and stuck it in my mouth with half of it hanging out so I wouldn't choke. I fell asleep almost instantly! I woke up with the paper towel out of my mouth and my mouth is super dry. I'm afraid to eat or drink anything bc I can't stand the salivating. I'd take dry mouth over that!

It seems many people have this problem. I do too. It is not DURING sleep the saliva produces as some people say, that's like drooling. It's just overproducing while I am awake and I stay up because it fills my mouth and I have to either spit it out or swallow. And it keeps me up for atleast an hour or two and causes alot of gas and bloating. I use to get it very often when I was younger especially when I can't sleep. But all of a sudden I am having it again twice this week and right now. UGH HOW ANNOYING. I wonder if there is some kind of underlying disorder us salivating excess people have? Any ways what I usually do is breath with my mouth and soon I fall asleep and it suddenly turns off the saliva switch. If I pay too much attention it will only get into a worse pattern. Goodluck to all and I hope there is a solution!!

Had this problem for while too,at times it comes and goes but sometimes it takes longer than usual.. Try brushing at night and any of the above home therapy, but the taking of salt is very dangerous avoid that... if all those don't give you the desired relief, then De-worm yourself, worms av a way of irritating the throat causing so much saliva in d mouth giving you this kind of vomiting sensation, that the way i feel even during the day but worse at night without any activities to put my mind of it.. I do this at times too and it works for me.. hoping you find this information helpful.
