Trapped in a dream

So a little upfront information. I am a 26 year old guy. I usually have terrible insomnia, except when I am sick (I sleep way too much then). I used to have a drug (heroin) problem but its been several months since I have used. I sleep walked a couple times a month ago (just around the house). I usually don't feel like I dream (don't remember them if I do) but this was jarring enough to remember. I wrote this out as soon as I got up to try to preserve as much information as I could before it slipped away.

So last night I fell asleep really early (like 5pm-ish). I was having bizarre dreams ranging from being hunted to just floating along the wind currents but nobody noticed. At some point I moved upstairs to bed and then things got bad. I think I fell asleep quickly. I was dropped into this weird hospital and the doctor told me I got shot but was recovering well. He told me to fill out this weird form. It asked all sorts of thing like if I knew who I was, gave me names of people and asked if I remembered who they were (I didn't have a clue who they were). I was getting uncomfortable and tried to wake up (like I felt there was imminent danger) and I couldn't move. I felt like I jerked awake and got up but turned to pick up my phone and saw myself still laying there asleep. Suddenly I was jerked back into that dream hospital. The doctor came in and told me I made several errors on the form that needed to be fixed. I did and noticed I didn't even finish filling out the back so I worked on that. I told him it might take a few minutes and he said he would be back. The back of the form was super weird. It asked me to arrange these weird egg shaped stuffed animal things in a certain way. There were like 30 of them and it wanted them in  one row with two stacked on each other (sitting on them was how it was worded). Then it wanted these movies arranged alphabetically as well as a stack of books. There were some trick questions on the form. There was a list of 10 questions and in the directions it said to write "wine" on number 4 which wouldn't have even made sense as an answer. I finished that and felt that danger impulse again and tried to wake up again but ended up "falling asleep" in the dream. I was woken up to a gunshot in the dream. I sprang up to see what happened and when I looked down the hall in I saw a good 200 feet was not a hospital but was a cliff with water raging below. At the end of this segment the hospital resumed. I was jerked back into dream bed before I could find out what happened. In the dream I woke up again and sensed danger. I felt I couldn't wake up so I went to leave the room again and as I peered out of the room I saw a guy in military fatigues get shot and a guy climbed over the cliff edge and took his M16 and headed toward the hospital hall opposite of me. Another military clad guy was slightly ahead of me and didn't seem to notice his fellow soldier was killed. I ran to warn him but as I got there the dude that climbed the cliff had turned and open fired on him. The soldier caught a bullet in the neck and as he fell I grabbed his gun and ran after the guy. He made it to the hospital hall before I did and was starting to shoot at these other military guys. I shot him before he could kill anyone else, I dropped the gun and ran back to the shot in the neck soldier and put pressure on his wound. His eyes opened and he tried to say something to me but i felt someone tug me away. Things got blurry and I everything went black. I tried to wake up but couldn't move still and then was back in the dream. The soldier was standing over me when I got up and thanked me for helping to save him and his friends. He started to say something else and it seemed super important when I actually jerked awake.

I am sort of terrified to go to sleep. I don't want to risk being trapped asleep again. That was a horrible feeling and I really do not want to go through it again. Any ideas on whats going on? Is it a fluke or is it likely to happen again?

Sleep paralysis Is normal when in REM (Dreaming mostly there) sleep. It is unusual that you wake up before the paralysis passes. But, I think you do not have to worry that you can't wake up.

I have never experience what you describe, but I have lots of weird dreams that I remember long enough to keep me awake and depressed during periods up to an hour or more before I fall back to sleep.  I have no idea how to deal with my problem, or yours, but believe you do not have to worry about not waking up.  I find sleeping pills of little or no use.
