Anyone familiar with these symptoms;
I seem to get sleep apneaApnea monitor Apnea of prematurity Breathing - slowed or stopped Central sleep apnea Obstructive sleep apnea Sleep apnea if I try to sleep while flying (I am NOT the pilot).
I never have it while sleeping in a bed at home or in a different country, only while aloft on an airplane.
My theory is it is the reduced oxygen in the cabin, but it makes long trips impossible. It is also very frightening. I wake up with a start, gasping for air.
Any suggestions?
You could consider using a cpap machine for flying only. Or, if your apnea is mild enough, there are boil-and-bite mouthpieces and even professional dental devices to help keep the jaw forward and mouth closed. Keeping your head upright with a pillow under your chin could help keep your airway open also. You shouldn't have to give up travel just because of sleep apnea. Those who deal with sleep apnea all the time have figured out how to manage it when traveling, so it should be doable for you too. Good luck.
