What do you know about Remeron?

I can't seem to get any solid answers about this drug. I have been taking this ant-depressant for about 6 years now. A doctor prescribed it for me when I went into a menopausal depression. I recently have tapered off it and am now 5 days off of it. I am having some withdrawl symptoms. First, of all it has messed up my sleep. Now that I am off it, I wake up several times during the night.I feel lethargic, and don't feel like doing anything. How does this drug affect your sleep, and how long before it goes out of the body? How long will I have these withdrawl symptoms? Any answers out there would help a lot!

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Besides insomnia Remeron withdrawal can cause diarrhea, dizziness, electric shock sensations, fatigue, flatulence and worsening depression.  Remeron has a half-life of 20-40 hours, and like other antidepressants, can cause withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation, therefore a slow and gradual dose reduction is recommended to minimize symptoms.  The effects should disappear in about 2-4 weeks; in the meantime adopt good sleep hygiene measures like going to bed at the same time, waking up at the same time, avoidance of alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages. Maintain warm, comfortable bedroom environment and engage in relaxing activities like a warm bath before bed time.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

I took Remeron post-menopausal also for about a year or two and I began having problems sleeping afterward. It also caused me to gain an unexpected 100 lbs due to the way it affects your carbohydrate metabolism. My doc told me this AFTER I had gained about 60 lbs.

The Remeron made me sleep sometimes 14 16 hours a day and also masked the problem I have with positional sleep apnea.

I now have a CPAP machine for breathing at night but without this medication knocking me out I think we might have noticed my sleep apnea sooner.

It took some time to get the medication out of my system.

Good luck.
