disturbed sleep after brain hemorrhage

by bokki, Oct 16, 2007 11:22PM
Hi there, I had a brain hemorrhage 3 years ago and since then I can't remember having had a good night's sleep! I generally fall asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow and have 2-3 hours of ok sleep but then wake each night with a really bad headache. The headache goes after 5 minutes of sitting up. Then I struggle to get back to sleep and sleep really lightly until the morning when again I wake with a bad headache that disappears on sitting up. I've only experienced this since the hemorrhage, I used to sleep brilliantly. It seems as though my head hates to be horizontal for more than a couple of hours, which means I get into a terrible sleeping pattern! Is this a normal side effect of a brain hemorrhage and is there anything I can do to help myself get into regular deep sleeps again?
Many thanks.

This is something that you must ask your neurologist or neurosurgeon about.  Worse headache when lying down is concerning for a mass, epidural/subdural hematoma, or subarachnoid hemorrhage such as what you had with "brain hemorrhage).

I have been out of John Hopkins University for about 2 months now where i suffered a level one S A H. The recovery from this seems to be dragging along, its a slow process. My sleeping behavior has changed before the hemorrhage
i slept for 7 hours consistently and now when i put in a busy day i can sleep 10 or more hours at one time. has anyone
experienced this and if so for how long?

My Dad has just suffured a subarachnoid so they say. All he does is sleep and when he is awake it is for about 10 min max then back to sleep or he will try and eat but he just gets sick.

What do you recomend?
He received a blow to the head from some kind of object and was robbed.  He doesn't remember anything.  He was in ICU on a ventalator and was released 1 day later out of ICU to go home under the care of my brother.  They said the bleed in his brain had gotten worse after the first ct scan they gave him no discharge paperwork and now we are getting the run around because he can't talk right or stay awake long enough to let the hospital know to release his medical records to us.
At this point we are just worried he is not getting better.
