hypnagogic jerks

I have been on Tramadol for 5 yrs now--1 tablet dailey as needed, for low back pain. Every day that I do take a Tramadol, that night I have the hypnagogic jerks as I am starting to fall asleep. They scare me so much that I am not taking the Tramadol and am suffering with my back pain. They make my whole body jump . I also get hiccups every time I take a Tramadol. This all started happening a few months ago. Please--is there another pain pill I can take without haveing the jerks? Thank you.

I also take tramadol twice a day, 50 MG in the morning and before bed. I started this after knee replacement surgery, for the other knee, and impinged shoulder nerve, and back pain. When I had my surgery, vistaril (hydroxyizine) was used as an adjunct to post op opioidd, as it potentiates the opiods, making them work better. I continued to take vistaril 25 mg with the ultram. Maybe once every couple of months I will get a jerk sensation. Bit if I am feeling jumpy, I take another vistaril and it calms me right down. I also take wellbuttin sporadically. Mostly to give me an energy boost. But my gen practitioner would not let me add in chantrix before my surgery when I had to quit smoking. He was worried about serotonin, and rightly so. I would recommend vistaril. Not addictive, no mood elevation, just brings a sense of calm.

Hi patty, how are you doing? You seemed to be under stress due to sleep disturbance and the low back pain incapacitating you to do your routine daily activities or at work place. You have had quite long time of taking Tramadol for relief of backache, had this drug been prescribed by doctor? And were you having re-examinations as needed. You need to see an orthopedist to get evaluated for your backache and if needed change the painkiller drug also. You also having drug induced gastritis. There are drugs alternative to Tramadol but you need to consult doctor before you plan to change or stop the drug. Try doing physical therapy or massage therapy for some time. Hard bed and hot shower before going to bed should be of some help. Keep posting your thoughts and take care.
