nod off for a second while driving

I have a brother that drops his head several times while driving.  I thank he is actually falling asleep for a second.  It's something that he can't control.  he will do this once every minute.  Is this a sleep disorder and is there any help for it.

I used to do that...and later found out that I was actually not falling asleep, but having seizures. It is my recommendation that he first see his primary doctor and let him/her know what is happening. Something can be done about it. Of course...this doesn't mean this is what is wrong with your brother, there are many things that may contribute to his falling asleep at the wheel...does he do it at other times, etc.? These things need to be looked at. And soon, before he has an accident and hurts himself or others. Please talk to him and encourage him to seek help with the matter.  Good luck.

Either he isn't getting adequate (enough or good quality) sleep making him really sleepy/exhausted during the day or he could have a sleep disorder.

Does he snore when he sleeps? He could have Sleep apnea causing him not to get good sleep even if he is sleeping 8 hours a night.  Sleep apnea could cause him to stop breathing for a few seconds so then he breifly wakes up to breathe again so he is constantly waking up even if he doesn't realize it thus not getting good quality sleep.

There is also another disorder called Narcolepsy in which you cannot control when you fall asleep.

If it is a constant problem he should see a doctor and try to be referred to or go to a neurologist that specializes in sleep disorders.  If the doctor feels there is cause for further testing they usually do a sleep study overnight to see how adequate the sleep is, etc...

Good luck and I hope he stays safe on the road!
