Untreated narcolepsy can make activities that require alertness a hazard to oneself and others, like cooking, driving, smoking, etc.

Not everyone who has severe sleep issues is narcoleptic. Have you been to a sleep lab for diagnosis? Having other sleep disorders that interfere with quality sleep can cause sleep attacks that come on suddenly and are unpreventable. Hopefully you or whoever you are inquiring about is under the care of a good neurologist and have a proper diagnosis and treatment.
