thought i was going insane

I was experiencing insomnia, but when i did sleep I'd. Experience. Such vivid dreams that when i woke i would experience. The most realistic hallucinations. Also on a fw occasions total paralysis, visions of a black cloud of some sort pinning me down an preventing me from calling out for help, sometimes lasting up to 5 minutes. I dont concentrate on the fear of the situation, rather more just trying to get up. Untill i started researching. Logical explanations, i didnt know what to believe. Anyone experiencing Similar situations, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What you are experiencing is called sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations. Sleep paralysis happens when you start to wake out of a dream but your brain wakes up while your body is still paralyzed (during REM or dream sleep you are paralyzed so you wont hurt yourself acting out your dreams).

The hypnogogic hallucinations are related. Do you have panic attacks or narcolepsy by any chance? My doctor told me both those problems make your specific sleep problems more likely.

Some people seek out these experiences, as a way to get closer to lucid dreaming. Personally, ib understand the experiences too terrifying to seek out. I at first had the feeling when I'd wake that there was an evil presence in the room with me. Specifically I knew it was Satan, trying to possess me. And I don't even think I believe in a literal Satan.

After this happened a few times I talked to my pastor/therapist about it. He assured me I was not going to be possessed against my will and that I was NOT possessed already. That particular fear didn't come back but it's still terrifying.

It tends to come in cycles. It will happen for a while, then go awayn fur years.

Do you take any medication?

I hope this helped put your mind at ease at least a little. You aren't going insane by any means.
