Finally, after 42 year, I tossed the smokes!!

Hi All;
   I'm new to this forum but not to the site. It's taken me a long time, too long, but the time has come. I tossed the cigarettes 3 days ago and I am so happy!! I used every excuse in the book not to quit, but when my grand-baby told me that she was afraid that I was going to die because I smoke, I knew then it was time.

   I tried the gum, patches. hypnosis ( waste of money) just about everything I could think of, even c/t. I read the post on the electronic cigarettes and in no way am I promoting them. I did order them, but I ordered the kit that comes with no nicotine. All I do is keep the cigarette looking thing between my fingers or chew on it.So far I haven't had any serious cravings.

   I took the kit to my doctor and he checked it out. He gave me the go ahead and wants me to check in with him once a month. I have to see him once a month anyway because he is my fms/cfs doctor, so that will be easy to do. I couldn't take the chantix(sp?) because of the prescription meds I am taking, and my doc seems to think this might work for me. This is by far the hardest thing I have ever tried to do, But I know in my heart that this is what I have to do. I'm on my 3rd day and I'm looking toward the day that I can say that I am an ex-smoker!!

gentle hugs
Angel

Welcome and Congratulations on being a non smoker! I agree with kathyjo in all that she said. I too was a smoker for many years and I relate to you in many ways.

You have given yourself a wonderful gift by quitting. I am so proud of you. I agree that you need to tell everyone around you that you have made the commitment to being a non smoker. You will gain strength through their support. Chew on whatever you have to in order to maintain you new status as a non smoker. Do whatever you need to do to become successful. Others before us have become successful and you will too.

This isn't an easy task, I know. But through this forum I have gained strength and I know that I just need to yell out a "help" and it will come. We need you as much as you need us. I am so glad you came into this forum.

Please keep us informed of your progress. We are here to help you become successful.

Congrats Angel!
This is the most important thing you will ever do, for yourself and for your loved one, so to make sure you stay on track, read the articles at whyquit and if your resolve ever weakens, make sure you post here for support.
Like you, I smoked a long time and I know how difficult it can be, so I want to make a suggestion : )  Make sure you tell everyone about your quit, for 2 reasons; 1. for support, it's vital! 2. to keep you honest : ) In the beginning, there were times when I thought I would cave in, and seriously, because I didn't want to disappoint my family, well that gave me the added strength ro resist.
Before you know it Angel, you will have a week, then a month, then a half-year. You will begin to see the positives soon!

Keep posting here, especially when you are jonesing : )
