i  know this might sound "twisted" but start up a new filthy drug habit, then when you go to quit that one, it makes quitting smoking feel like a walk in central park

Mark Twain said this: "quitting smoking is easy, I did it one thousand times".

Don't try to quit until you are truly ready to do it...Why torture yourself? Just stay positive...don't get discouraged because negative energy will only defeat you. You will do it when you want to do it! STAY POSITIVE...Think about quitting as a NICE thing to do for yourself. And when you do quit, keep saying things like,  "this feels great" ..."I smell so good"..."my smile is clean"..."I look and feel better already"..."Instead of buying a pack of cigarettes, I am going to buy myself a new shirt"...BE HAPPY. BE ALIVE AND HEALTHY!

you are not alone in trading addictions......I personally know a few as well as seeing them here on the forum.
I live in NYC too so maybe you can get the patches under your wife's name and pick up some regular gum that tastes like fruit and try it again : )

The poster,  DelRaybchFL6525 had some very frightening problems from chewing and it sounds as if you are beginning to experience some of these!
Good luck to you and we are here for you if you should need support : )

I quit Jan. 1st, 2009 after starting up again back in Sept. of 2008... (I know, I know...).

I feel a LOT better, and my wife and kids appreciate it (and my bank account does too!). I smoked 2 1/2 packs a day, and in Manhattan, that's a LOT of money I felt EXTREMELY GUILTY about spending, especially since I'm currently unemployed, and we don't have ANY extra money to spare!

But...  - Now I am currently addicted to Nicorette (Fruit - 4 mg.) gum. I pop TWO 4 mg. pieces in my mouth about 8, 9 or 10 times a day!

NYC had a program where they gave you (free of charge) a 3 month's supply of a mint flavored Nicorette gum knock-off. I started up with that and thought I was doing o.k., but now - 5 months later, I am now addicted to the Nicorette fruit gum...!

I'm starting to feel a tightness in my throat, and really feel a sort of a "numbness" in it when I awake in the morning, and am getting paranoid that I'm giving myself either throat cancer or some esophagal problem...

I have GOT to stop this gum addiction NOW. It's been over 5 months now that I'm on it. Definitely NOT the recommended way of doing it, according to Nicorette's instruction booklet! (Although I'm sure that they do not mind in the slightest that I'm now addicted to using THEIR product now...!).

Watch yourself if you use the gum to get off the cancer sticks!

I have to agree with the dudes above, I quit on January first and it was like a someone flipped a lightswitch in my head, I just didn't want to smoke any longer.  Then I just used some nicotine gum to get over the first couple of days, which of course are the hardest.  Strangely the Nicorette packaging suggested chewing several pieces a day for a few months...I only chewed pieces sparingly for a couple of weeks before I couldn't do it anymore (not counting the first couple of days where I chewed alot).  At the beginning when my nicotine tolerance was really high, they didn't bother me.  But as my tolerance for it subsided, the gum started burning my throat and making me feel really sick.  Luckily at that point I just switched to ordinary gum and that was fine for me, and I haven't had a cigarette since New Year's Eve.  I chew a little more gum than I used to, but other than that my life is back on track, lol.

I hope you can experience similar success.

wa5rlb, Congrats on your quit, and I agree with you regarding Chantix. It worked for me and on my first try : ) That was 16 1/2 months ago.

vqnguyen, I had none of the complaints that others did so I would do my homework on them if you should decide to use it. You can go through the archives here by using the search feature on the top of the page.
Whatever you decide, good luck and make sure you prepare for it.

I know just what you've going through.  I smoked for the better part of 40 years and tried to quit numerous times.  I've tried the patch, gum and every other means of drug store aids I could find but nothing worked.  The reason nothing worked is because I enjoyed smoking.  My doctor and I had discussion after discussion and eventually he gave me a prescription for Chantix.  He said this is the only thing that will work.  This is a two part RX.  The first segment, one takes a pill for 30 days, then you go to the second segment.  About half way through the second segment, I no longer want a cigarette.  That has been 9 months and I haven't smoked since.

This series of RX comes in two prescriptions and you'd better be ready to quit because the cost is very expensive.  Walmart is the cheapest I found and each of the two prescriptions was in the neighborhood of $ 120.00 and don't expect any help from your insurance company.  They have been know to pay 100% but don't count on it.  My wife quit a little over a year ago just cold turkey but I wasn't willing to do that.  Had it not been for Chantix, I'd either still be smoking or be dead.

Jade is right on.
You really have to want it for yourself, never mind doing it for others.
With all of the education out there, knowing how much it harms you and even more so with secondhand smoke, it's amazing that there are people who still smoke! I was one of those idiots : )  Long after the warnings, long after my children getting multiple colds and long after my daughter's diagnosis of asthma, I was still smoking. I didn't quit until I could barely breathe anymore. I had pains in my back, near the lungs and my fingertips and toes were always cold and tingling. It felt like this happened overnight but in reality, it happened with my first cigarette 38 years ago.
Please do read the articles on whyquit, especially the motivation column.

We are here for you. We are a good support system having gone through, going through or planning on going through a quit : )
Good luck to you.

Let me ask you this.  Are you READY to quit or do you just think you should quit?

Nothing will work until you become ready to tell yourself that you will never take another puff.  Ever!

Quitting smoking is not easy.  You have to bring every ounce of willpower you possess in order to be successful.

Try visiting whyquit.com and see what you think after viewing some of the pictures there.  You are very young.  Maybe frightening yourself will help?
