Quit, how to stay quit

alright here it is, i was a pack a day until 1986, quit with my wife for 18 yrs. then she started smoking again in 2001, needless to say after not wanting any, being around her for a couple yrs smoking it reawoke my smoking disease. So, smoked on and off in 2003, quit for 2004. Then she died in 2005 not from smoking at 41. So I felt justified to bury my grief in cigs. since then i have struggled on and off. even stopped for 2.5 months after surgeries and started again each time. Now back to one or 5 a day or none for a few days, but it keeps coming back.
I have good resolve to stop but break down at times well after the nicotine is gone from my system. I truly enjoy smoking but know that its not good for my health. My heart runs faster, throat is sore, and have buried two step fathers from a lifetime of smoking.
How do i quit and STAY QUIT?
I really want to stop and stay stopped. any help and suggestions would be truly appreciated.

bosnianworrier said it best and I will repeat it, whyquit.com. Red all of the articles under
Joel's Library/Education and really learn about your particular addiction to nicotine. The physical part is over in 72 hours but it's our emotional addiction that it the one we have to fight. My personal favorite is "My cigarette, my friend." Under the categories are a group of articles, so much reading but I'm sure that there is one for every urge, every thought.......
Sorry about your wife. Stress and depression are among, if not the main reason that we smoke. It's time to learn to disassociate smokes from anything positive, good luck!
