You need to change your lifestyle because somehow smoking becomes part of your persona.  It is a nicotine addiction, but it is also more than that.  The patches would take care of quitting, if it was addiction alone.

Instead of several cups of coffee of a morning, fill the tub, add bubbles, soak and drink a glass of orange juice. Coffee is also an addiction so you can't stop it all at once, I wouldn't think, while quitting smoking.  Take a walk.  Go visit a non smoker who you have avoided.  Clean out that one area in the flower bed.  If you want a cigarette while watching TV, try listening to talk radio or music.

One woman quit smoking by saying she focused on the cigarette she wanted at the time.  She didn't think about it being forever, she thought about it as, "I won't smoke this time."

I have quit smoking two times. Once for a day and once for a week.  The first time I was hypnotized, but it didn't work.  The second time, I tried sustituting food for cigarettes and there wasn't enough food to do it. ha  So you can tell that I am no expert on quitting.  I just thought I would share what I know about quitting with you and others on here.

I have a distant friend that did quit smoking by going to a hypnotist.  Another went to an accupucture place and had a steel bead put in his ear and rolled it between his thumb and finger when he wanted to smoke. Another friend said she got mad thinking how the cigarette companies lied and threw her cigarettes down.  Another said she associated puffing on a cigarette with giving Satan a blow job, which is a accurate association in a way.

My husband quit smoking about 20 years ago.  He first went to chewing tobacco, then he just quit without patches or anything.  He did suck on hard candy a lot.  I suppose that kept his mouth busy.

Part of it is sucking in, so maybe breathing in deep when you want one would help some.  Part is the hand to mouth habit.  Sometimes I wish I could find a fake cigarette to use for that.  Remember when they made candy cigarettes?

I have noticed that all ex smokers I know take some kind of prescription for nerve or antidepressent pills, so that may help some.  Ex smokers seem tense and on edge a lot even with taking nerve pills.

I have been thinking that some day I will throw down my cigarettes and never smoke again, but that day never comes.

Good luck to all who are trying to quit.  I will check back every once in awhile.

I agree with what others posted . whyquit.com helped me alot .The thing that really helped me before I quit was a few weeks before i quit I strated changing little things I would not smoke at the normal times, i would not smoke in my car. I gave myself a place i could smoke mine was the back step . If I was not on the back step i did not smoke . If I was out and about i would not smoke only on the step this helped reduse the amount I smoke before I quit and that was really helpful.I used walking as a sub alot also if i wante to smoked i would go for a short walk this helped get my mind off of it
Please post often we will try to help you as much as we can

When I quit, I also quit all consumption of coffee, sodas, and alcohol.   Those were all triggers.  After a couple weeks, I could once again start to have an ocassional cup of coffee.  Lots of juice the first day and lots of water ever since I quit has helped a lot.  As was suggested already, a lot of reading on the Internet including whyquit.com has aided with my education and desire to stay smoke free and healthy.

I think its very important to KNOW that I can stay smoke free.   If I believe I can't, then I probably won't.

Just remember sometimes it takes 2-3-4-5 times to try to quit before you quit successfully, I mean I'm no expert only been cigarette free for almost 2 months but I know when you are really ready you will quit and never take another puff again, just keep trying that time will come, I just hope with the condition you have it'll come sooner than later, just like the others said, go to websites, try patch, anything that would help, take more walks, i've noticed in my case that since I stopped I actually like and enjoy going for walks for, it makes me feel so relaxed. Well I really really wish you the best of luck with quitting...

If you are able to quit for one year, you can do it again and try to stay active either at this forum or somewhere else to help you thru the few month or so. There are some new patches to try next time you get ready and i read a study done at Duke University where the ppl started wering their patches two weeks before their quit date and it helped in reducing their smoking and some ppl changed to lower tar and nic cigs during that time. Good Luck Next Time
