Hi Pat,
Congrats on your decision to quit! I too believe that you really have to want it before you can make it happen.
I too started at 12 and quit at 52. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and it was the absolute best thing too.
Support is so very important and I think it's what makes a quit successful. We are here for you, for as long as it takes and as long as you want to stay active : ) I have been here a year & 8 months! I have also quit for that length of time. I used Chantix but I am wondering why you are going with the gum? I have no personal experience with it, but I do know many who have used it, are still using it, even many years after their quit. It appears that it's a trade-off in addictions. There was also a thread on here about the gum. Here is the link to it:

Make sure you research the alternatives. The patch seems to be the #1 choice but the best way is probably cold turkey.
There is a wonderful website, whyquit.com that will help you get through some rough times. The site supports a cold turkey quit, but you can read all of the articles which are very helpful : )
Everyone here on the forum are at different stages of their quit and can give you their own perspectives ; ) I already gave you mine and I stand by it.
Write often and say whatever you need to. You can speak your mind here and we will all understand where you are coming from.
My best advice would be to read. Educate yourself. Why do I smoke. What does it do for me and then what is it doing to me. When you understand why, then you are ready for when.
We are here for you : )
