my 8 year old grandson has a speech problem and I need to find out what to do.
Since he was about 3 years old he has stuttered and had difficulty completing a sentence. We thought he would out grow this condition but it has gotten worse.
When he tries to talk he stutters but also jumbles his words until you can't understand anything he says. People look away when he tries to talk and then he constantly grabs their arm or taps them on the shoulder trying to keep their attention.
Any advice would be appreciated
Your grandson really needs to be assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist. They will be able to help with the stutter as well as ***** his other difficulties. He may have disordered speech or a kind of mental dyspraxia where he cannot get his thoughts and words in the right sequence to make sense. This will have a big effect on his social interaction abilities and self esteem. It it also something he could be teased about and that might make him decide to stop talking altogether.
Do you have any other concerns about his development or difficulties he has with social interaction?
How is he getting on at school?
