speech delay in 24 months son, no words at all

by seema20, Sep 17, 2009 12:29PM
Hi, I am mom of 24 months old son. He is second son. He is 24 months old and so far he has not spoken any words at all. He does some babbling but not any purposeful words at all. His hearing is fine. He does seem to understand few command but not all of it. When I call him, He doesn't respond. I don't know what's wrong with him. His motor skill is fine and all other physical development is alright up to his age. I am very frustated and stressed about him. Been to speech therapist but so far no improvement. HELP

Your posting reminds me of our nephew.  He did not speak one word until past his third birthday.  He also did not respond to his name.  He was diagnosed with PDD-NOS which is a high-functioning form of autism.  I'm not saying this is the issue with your son but it might be wise to contact your pediatrician for more advice if you think this might be a possibility.  I do know that early intervention with a child suffering from autism does improve the prognosis.  I hope that this posting does not upset you and I hope that autism is not the issue with your son.  I wish you the best ...

Are you sure he is not saying anything at all? Children say things VERY differently than we do and he may be hard to understand. My daughter has been speaking words from a very young age, but even at 3 still doesn't say much very clearly. My husband and I can understand her and so can the people that are close to us, but others have a hard time understanding her still. Just be patient, read to him, and don't worry too much. :)
