Recovery Outlook For Severe Stroke

Hello,

I posted earlier about the nursing home my mother is in. She is 78 and had a stroke on october 4th. She has not had much progress since that time and cannot move one side of her body. If there is no progress over such a  long period of time, I have seen from articles on the internet that the predicted outcome over the long term is not so hopeful. Does anyone have any similar experiences with a family member who has not responded to therapy when initially in the rehab facility?

No improvement. The stroke was on October 5th. She cannot move either her left arm or left leg. Age 78. I never in a thousand years thought this would happen. Has this happened to anyone else? One sided paralysis with no improvement? Can't walk, can't even stand. Will need to be taken care of now, and no one thinks that will ever change. I only speak with the social worker at the rehab center, which she will be leaving very soon, as soon as her medicaid app is approved.

I never heard , before this, of someone who can't move just their left arm and leg. Stroke is the number one cause of adult disability and yet you hear very little about it. I wish something could have been done to prevent this from happening. Scott

I'm so sorry about your mother and for your loss as well. Sometimes there are personality changes with strokes,so that could be the case. She might be exhausted, too.  I wish you both luck, Godspeed.

I called her today. She is so very sick. She couldn't talk on the phone and put it down after only a few seconds. I didn't even get the chance to say anything. She just said she can't see me now.

I did everything with my mother, and she was very independent, right up until the day before the stroke. She took the bus 2 miles to go shopping with a wagon on the bus on that day and bought a toaster. I can't believe this has happened and its been 2 months now.

Someone else posted about activities to do in a nursing home for a mother with one sided paralysis like hers. It sounds like my mother, who has to wear an adult diaper at all times. I am very saddened by what has happened to her, and spend so much time looking at sites on the internet about stroke like this.
