RE: Vertebral Artery Bllod Clot that has gotten Longer with in 1 year.

My 72 year old Father is younge, fit and HEALTHY. His Cholesterl, BP, HDL,VLDL,TG are all normal however last year he was told he has a Vertebral Artery Occlusion- A blood clot in the lower brain stem. After having 2 episodes that mimiced a stroke he was diagnosed. He was put on blood thinners then taken off. He also has type II diabetes that is totally undercontrol by diet and exercise but he does take BP lowering drugs and Cholesterol lowering drugs(Lipitor) and is on Zocor.

Now it is a year (Jan 2008) and he went for a follow up CT scan. The scan revealed that  the clot is still encapsulated- but that is has gotten longer in diameter.

How do you prevent a stroke? Is there any surgery available? Is there any medication to decrease this from getting longer? What are the chances that he can live with out the stress of having a sroke at any moment. Is there a favorable out come? He takes a baby aspirin daily.

All INFORMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATIVE. Thank you so much.
