getting off dilantin after having brain bleed from rt carotid surgery

by rustys, Jul 18, 2004 12:00AM
I recently had symtoms of dizziness and head pressure.  Other symtoms included my legs jerking uncontrollably before going to ER. I ended up having surgery for 99% carotid blockage. I was the 2% that ended up having a stroke after the surgery.  I didn't know that I had a brain bleed until I left the hospital and had a grand mal seizure.  I was told this was caused by the brain bleed in the basal gangilon.  I was put on dilantin and depakote. I am also on meds for high blood pressure (which I have had since I was 25. I am a 56 yr old male.  The dilanton makes me feel really tired and I am expericing a loss of balance. I went to rehab for 10 days and have been home for 1 week.  I would like to be able to get off the anti-convulsives since my seizure was caused by the brain bleed.  How long will I have to stay on this anti-seizure medication?  It makes me feel like a zombie and is interfering with my recovery.  What are the chances that I would have another seizure since I have never had one before and there is no family history of seizures? Please help since I hear conflicting opinions on this.
