i am concerned about my mother

by concernedperson18, Nov 13, 2007 10:14AM
My mother had a brain aneurysm and a stroke about 4 years ago.  Now she is reporting to me and other people and the doctors that she is now having seizures and to everyone this is a big problem but nobody will tell her what is wrong with her.  They will only tell her that she needs to make an appointment with a nerologist.  She doesn't have an appointment till the 5th of december and she keeps on having the seizures, me and my mother were told that if and when she has seizures that can or could be her last one.  I just need some help on finding out why she is still having the seizures and she is on medication for them too.  Unless Depakote is not a seizure medication.  Please i need help.

Sincerely,

Concerned person

There are many reasons for siezures, some serious and some life threatening. Epilepsy is not the end of the wor;d. But I cannot assume anything about the mechanism of her siezures. Nor will I attempt to. The appointment on the 5th of December with a neurologist is absolutely positively unacceptable. I cannot believe any practicing physician presented with such a history would make such a recommendation. There is a "missing piece" to this story. You mother needs to be in a hospital for an evaluation, as of 12 hours ago.

Seizures are life threatening if they occur back to back, ex. 4 or more within minutes of each other. Depakote is a good antiseizure medicine but your dosage may need to be adjusted through blood work. A good neurologist will have you evaluated beforehand so when the appt. comes up he can see what he's up against. Your mother may need another antiseizure med to go with the Depakote. I am on two meds myself, one being Depakote, & have been under control for over a year. Good luck & God bless you both.
