left brain stroke

I have a 68 year old sister who had a stroke about 3weeks ago, she was treated for it and sent for some rehab. for about 1week.Even when she was in rehab. she had problems eating small amounts and drinking small amounts of liquids, without throwing them up. This continues to this day. She is losing weight, and her strength. And the medication they have given her does no good , because she throws them up with the water she needs to swallow them.. She takes a half a teaspoon of yogurt or some applesauce and can't even hold  that down. They keep telling her it takes time to get the brain back to normal. But how long can she live without any real food in her system.
She is asking if there is anyone out there that has ,or at one time might of had that same problem. And is there something that she could do to help herself. She sure is not getting any answers from her doctors. I really would appreciate any information that I could receive. She really needs some help soon.  Thank You. Bill

Thank you for your reply on my Post regarding brain stroke on left side.
My sister is under medical care at the present time. But the doctors seem to think that this is some rare case. She has lost some 32# in 3weeks. They now have her on intravenous, she still could not keep down any pills.
She had been to a rehab.unit for a week, they let her go  home, and thats when she still could not take any pills, without throwing up.I am keeping in daily touch with her by phone( I live about 140 miles from her residence) and
at 83yrs. of age have health problems of my own. There is no one else to keep an eye on her..So she may have to be placed in some assisted care facility. I am praying that some Doctor can find out what her health  problem is .I will keep in touch, as I can see by your post's that you are in the Medical Field. Thanks again for your advice. Wm.W

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi, her problems with swallowing could be due to the stroke. If she is unable to retain any food, she may need to be admitted and may need intravenous alimentation. However, if she can retain fluids, then she could continue taking frequent fluids, and once she tolerates this well, she can progress to semi solids then to solid food. And she should take smaller quantities at frequent intervals as tolerated. If at present there is a worsening of her symptoms she should consult her doctor.  Regards.
