my father's sleep pattern post stroke

Hi,
My father had a severe ishemic stroke on 020107...
His right side was completely paralysed; besides he has was diagnosed with severe expressive aphasia, he cannot read or write too:( His progress seemed good from March to May... he is now able to walk with support. But in the last couple of months (May onwards) his progress has been minimal. He also has minor epileptic fits occasionally. He is under medication for that too.

Unlike other stroke patients, my father is not self motivated. He needs to be pushed to carry out basic tasks for himself and to do his exercises. My dear mother is constantly trying to drive his recovery with help from a physiotherapist and speech therapist. The latest problem is his sleep pattern has changed - he sleeps in the day and is awake at night... This is very difficult on my mom who I think has barely slept in 3 weeks. Because my father sleeps in the day, he barely manages to get throught his exercises in the day... This lack of movement has resulted in further problems like svere muscle spasms, urinary infections, the list goes on.
We have been struggling with this for weeks now, so it would be great if someone could help.

Thank you for the update! That information is shocking & amazing.  I'm new to this site,so I don't know if that's unusual, but it sure sounded like it to me.  Glad he's better.

Here's an update on my father. It may help to read this if your loved one is exhibiting a sleeping disorder.  We had to admit him yesterday because he was barely awake over 1.5 days. The doctor said that he could have lapsed into a coma in that state. The hospital is running tests on him… till now it turns out that his body is low on sodium and some electrolytes, therefore the sleepiness. When I met him this morning, he was wide-awake and alert. So, we are hoping that he gets out of the hospital in a day or two and that we can make it for our appointment with Dr. Vasa this Sunday.
