post vertebral arterial dissection recurrent dizziness

by canuck123, Nov 14, 2005 12:00AM
I had a left vertebral arterial dissection two months ago that affected my cerebellum. Now at home recovering, as well as having on/off headaches and ongoing tiredness, whenever I look backwards over my left shoulder I experience intense dizziness (reminiscent of my initial attack)... it passes once I turn back. Is this the result of brain damage (it took the doctors about 12 hours to diagnose I was having a VAD)or is this part of the healing process? Thanks.

My husband went to the ER on Nov 13th after he had awoke and could not walk, had slurred speech and very nauseated.  After being in the ER for 12 hours, they wanted to discharge him and diagnosed him as having a viral infection.  After much persistance from myself and family members, they did further testing and found that he had suffered from a stroke.  The next day they realazed that he also had a right vertebral artery dissection.  They put him on a heprin drip in the hospital and sent him home on coumadin.  After being home for about 2 weeks he started having right sided neck pain again, he had this for aprox. a month prior to going to the hospital ( he thought it was a pinched nerve ) so he had another CT at which time they found that the tear was getting longer...they put him on blood pressure medication, even though he has never had high BP.  After that, he has felt much better, he is just very careful with how he turns his head.  If I were you, I would check with your neurologist and maybe have another scan to see how it is healing.  My husband goes in in February to be re-checked, I am praying that it is healing so we can put all of this behind us, it has been so stressful.  Here is another website for you to check out if you haven't already done so vertebralarterydissection.com.  Best of luck!
