new to this site

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site.  I am 45 1/2 and still trying to conceive.  I was wondering if any of you would reccommend a great RE for IVF.  Has anyone heard of Dr. Garza in Mexico or Dr. Silber in St. Loius?  I heard some good things about these two RE's  but no personal stories.  I did hear about the RE in NYC and upon further investigation heard personal accounts of horror stories with that dr.

For those who want a partial success story I did get pregnant naturally Jan 25, 2011.  I carried for over 4 months.  First time ever pregnant.  My baby had a fatal birth defect so I terminated on May 12th.  It was very tough.  I am looking into IVF as like the rest of you I don't have much time.  I went to see a RE and last week I only had 2 embryos.  He will not do IVF on me unless I go with donors.  He said since he knows I can carry my success rate is extremely high. (the baby's fatal defect was a large omphalacele with heart defects....not age or genetic related).

So as you can see due to a very low embryo count I probably have one maybe two chances at this so I need a RE who has a very high success rate.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Just one other thought, has anyone looked into getting a surrogate to carry your eggs and sperm?  The RE's are always pushing donor eggs cause this is where they make all the money, but what if you use your good eggs and baby daddy sperm on another carrier.  If my eggs end up being good and I have a successful pregnancy, I would be the first person to step up to the plate to help anyone else out there get their dream come true.... but then again the RE lose a lot of money so I am sure this new way of thinking is kept quiet.

Any feedback on RE's would be ever so greatful.

Sharon

Hi Alexis,
I did look up Dr. Parry, he is still with that clinic but he is also in kentucky.  I cannot wait to go to NY to talk to these docs...I want to start right away in October.  If these doc's don't work out, who knows I might be kentucky bound.  I am currenlty corresponding with a lady a little older than me under going invitro with the doc from NY.  She likes him.

I hope I will have good news to report back.  Have a good night.

good luck to you.   I remember feeling more depressed as well during my journey.   Even though I had success and have a wonderful baby boy now, it was 2 years to get there, and 2 m/c's.    I remember the hope, the wait and the sadness every month when nothing was happening.   I was so angry at my body for failing me and getting more and more depressed every month that nothing happened.   I was sure my dh would hate me for not giving him a child, but that never was true.   Its so easy to let the pressure, sadness and longing consume us and it easily "becomes" us.   Don't let this journey become you.    Remember, its a journey and with enough faith and courage what is supposed to happen....will happen.    Dr. Parry had more faith in me than I did and was so incredibly happy for me when it did happen.   His whole staff cried when we saw that little heartbeat cause they were all with me for the 2 that never did beat.    After I had my son, I took him to visit Dr. Parry and he genuinely couldn't wait to hold him and smile at him and play with him, it was awesome.    He e-mailed me afterward and told me that this was what helped him get thru everyday, this is what his job was all about and he was so thrilled for us.   He's there with you every step of the way, you never feel like a paycheck to him, he will share in your heartbreak and he will celebrate your success.

I look forward to hearing of your BFP soon :).

My Best Wishes to you.

You are so awesome for giving me this info.  Yes I will absolutely google him.  I am going to NY at the end of Sept because there are two docs there that were recommended.  Sadly, I get a little more down each month as I move farther away from my pregnancy.  This will be my third menstral cycle and still no pregnancy.  All my friends said since I was pregnant once, I would be very fertile right after.  Well it's not happening.  I guess I was living in that hope while searching for RE.

I will keep you posted.......and congratz on your success!!!!!

Many hugs
Sharon

I just saw your post.   I am 44 and just had a little boy (with my own eggs) in april.   I had 2 m/c's and then went to see an RE here in Wisconsin named Preston Parry.   He is absolutely awesome.   Never never never did he have 1 bad thing to say to me, I always referred to him as my "glass half full" dr.   He told me the age would play a factor but he said we could over come it.   My FSH was high but he said..."you may have less eggs, but we can find a good one".    He was always so incredibly helpful and positive, always told me the best way to spend my money vs. wasting it on things that won't work.   Less than a year of seeing him, I was pg and the baby is here with me today.

If you google him you can see info about him and there is a video of him speaking.   He was in Wisconsin but I recently received a letter saying he would be moving....I can't remember the state.   I think if you called though, they would tell you which state he was moving to, I know it was a southern state...maybe tennessee?

I would highly recommend him for just so many reasons.   don't know what his success rate is, but his attitude and skill are incredible.

good luck

Hi Melanie,

Thanks for being honest.  The horror stories I got back from that facility was most people said the "medical Care" was not good.  So I guess I am in fear of having them do such an important medical procedure and hurt me medically.  Do you trust them that they would not do anything to hurt your female anatomy that could  jeopardize you for life (meaning permanent infertility)?  If its just an issue that they have no bedside manners, I can deal with that.

Their affiliate is in st.Louis and the Doctors name is Shilber.  They also do mini IVF.  I was contemplating going there but after I researched the doctor he is a Urologist.  That struck me a little funny, however he is the first doctor in the US and I believe the world to actually do a successful OVARY transplant and the lady had a baby!!
The prices are the same for NY and St.Louis...I was thinking of doing it in NY only because I have friends there so I would have a place to stay to save some money.

Here is my email: ***@****

If you have the time and want to talk via telephone, email me so I can give you my cell.

Thanks again for all the info

Sharon.

H Sharon,
I am using New Hope I do admit the suck in many ways! The truth is Dr. Zhang has 5000 patients in our age group. I know how upset I've gotten with them, I've cried..etc... As long as you have a big mouth and can fight for what you want and need and you can give it to them and demand what you need then I think you will be ok. If I get my BFP I will tell everyone how effin fantasic they are! For the money truly is worth it. I payed double my for my ivf, 12000.00 and 3500 for fet here I got the same follie count 11 this one 10. For 6500.00. for3 mini ivf's it's 8400.00 you pay 4800.00 for the 1st one, 3600.00 for the 2nd and 0 for the 3rd. He likes to do all of them 3 months in a row, he collects the embies then when you have them he transfers them. The charge is 1200.00 per fet. It's well worth all the aggravation!  Many of us AMA (advanced Maternal Age)'s only get 1-2 to blast  per cycle so tries not to waste time and collect as may as you can in 3 cycles. In my case I am not going to do any more cycles and concentrate on the 10 I have. I pray we get at least one!
Good luck and SSBD,
Melanie

Thanks for the info globetrot.  Melanie is SOOOOO right, there are no sites with good statistics for this age bracket, especially for me at 45.  I also fall into a very different catagory as I know for absolutely certainty that I can carry.  Most of us who are or want to do IVF are having a hard time maintaining a pregnancy.  Like I said in my earlier post, the devastation for me was carrying her for 4 1/2 months a 3 days and having to say good bye.  So now I am ready again...but the RE will not do IVF (in florida) at my age.  He is pushing donor eggs.

Melanie can you tell me what doctor you are using and is it the hope fertility place in NY?

If there is anyone else out there our age, first time mothers who were successful with IVF please chime in.  I would love to hear all the positives out there and not the negative I keep hearing from the doctors.

The truth is there is no real place on the cdc's web site for the success rated for us woman over 42, they lump us over 42 together. Yes if you use donor eggs you can see that.
Good luck honey.
Update
10 out of my 11 embies confirmed fertilized!

You can find fertility success rates online too.  Look up "sart' or you can also find the details on the cdc site.  I am very sorry for your loss.  I have heard surrogates are $50k- but I am not sure about whether that was their eggs or your own.  Do you have a family member or friend who could carry for you?  I think maybe the surrogate might use their own eggs because they might be more viable.  I am sorry you have the feeling it is all about the money- means it is definitely time to find a new clinic!!!!!!!!!!   Good luck to you!

Hi Melanie,

Thanks so much for your reply....you are currently going to Dr. Zang?  He is the one I wanted to go to but when I posted it online I got so MANY bad stories about him.  I also did not know they did mini IVF.

Please let me know who your Dr. is as you give me much hope.  I hope your transfer is successful!!!!!  I will keep you in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Sharon

Hi Honey,
I am 45 currently at that RE in NYC..lol yes they suck if you don't know what to expect! But I had my ER on Sunday, I made 11 eggs they called today and 8 confirmed fertilized out of 11, they will update me tomorrow. There is no age limit or fsh, he does things a bit differently. The price is right! $8400.00 for 3 mini ivf's. $4800.00 for the 1st $3600.00 for the 2nd and 3rd is free. If you get your BFP then you don't pay anymore. I know ppl complain but I know they specialize in AMA.  I will keep you posted!

Thanks for your info.  My problem is the RE I am currently going to will not do IVF with my eggs.  I still ant to try, at least once with my own eggs.  The Dr. in mexico I read up on is very cheap, and the Dr. in st. Louis does mini IVF so you get the most bang for your buck.

Thanks again

There is a place in Colorado that has high success rates with "older" woman.  Corm I believe.   I think a surrogate is much more expensive do to the legal aspects, donor cycles you can get a shared risk program for around 30 grand...or 1 cycle for around 18,000, known donor for a lil less...surrogates ate around 50,000.  Not sure why you would need one if your uterus doesn't have issues tho?  I wish u bucket loads of success :). I am getting ready to do a transfer with donor embryos :). Cheapest route there is :).
