Sam, yours is by far the most common question I get from guys your age. (Believe it or not, the second most common is "is my penis too big?"). What that means is that there's not a guy on this planet who has not wondered if his penis size is "normal." The worst way you can answer that? By looking at other guys. (All guys check other guys out in the shower and some make the even worse mistake of comparing themselves to guys in porn. Why do you think these guys are in porn in the first place? Their acting ability??)

First of all, most guys measure their penis the wrong way. (C'mon, guys, we've all done it). A soft (flacid) penis means absolutely nothing. I've seen guys with a 1 inch flacid penis and a 7 inch erection. I've also seen guys with a 5 inch flacid penis and a 5 inch erection. (You'll sometimes hear these two types referred to as "showers and growers"). In fact, smaller flacid penises usually undergo a higher percentage of growth with an erection. So, checking out your buddies in the shower tells you absolutely nothing. When you say you have a 3.1 inch penis is that flacid (soft) or erect (hard)? It makes a huge (pardon the pun) difference.

Now, what's normal. Easy answer. You are. What I mean by that is whatever your body is it's supposed to be that way. Who's more normal, the guy who wears a size 10 shoe or the guy who wears a size 12? Oh, you must mean average. OK, we can talk about that.

The average adult erection is 5.8 inches in length. That's the length of a fully erect penis, measured on the dorsal (back) side (the side that is nearer your belly when you have an erection), as measured from the base (where it meets your belly making sure you push the ruler through your pubic hair), to the very tip. You might see some things on the internet that give a higher number for average (such as 6-7 inches), but those studies are what we call "self-reported". In other words, they asked a bunch of guys who long their penises were and the guys gave them an answer. Of course, no one added an inch or two when asked. The most reliable numbers come from studies where professionals (people who actually know what they're doing) actully measured erections. (Sorry girls, I'm not gonna tell you how to get that job). All of these studies put the average at around 5.8 inches. ERECT. That's important to remember.

Now, on to puberty. All of the problems with measurement and averages that I've talked about have to do with adult penises. Since you're 14, the problem is 10 times harder to deal with. Puberty in boys can begin anywhere between 9 and 14 years old. We assign a number from the Tanner Scale (Google it sometime, you'll find a whole bunch of information on puberty). Actually, we assign two numbers - one for genital (penis and testicle) development and one for pubic hair development. From the time you're born until you start puberty you are a G-1 P-1, meaning no change in your genitals and no pubic hair. Your genitals and hair develop at different rates, so we use both numbers separately. Since your question has to deal with penis length, I'll just stick to the G number.

The first genital change is enlargement of your balls (testicles). Most guys don't even notice this. If I asked 100 guys your age if they've started puberty yet, 100 of them would base their answer on whether they had pubic hair or not. Not necessarily true. So, if you're testicles have grown larger and hang lower than they did before, you're in G-2. Another sign is that your sac (scrotum) starts to get darker in color. In G-3 your penis starts to get longer. Again, you might not even notice this because flacid penis length even varies throughout the day. (Ever have a "turtle"?). In G-4 it continues to get longer and also starts to get fatter. Usually by this time you have some pubic hair (P-2 at least) so you know you've started puberty. Remember, these can happen at any age and at any rate (although about one stage per year is average). Eventually you reach G-5 P-5 which is adult. This can happen anytime between the ages of 13 and 20 and still be considered "normal."

So, is a 3.1 inch penis at age 14 normal? Now that have all the information you tell me. You can find all sorts of charts and numbers on the internet that will tell you what "normal" is at what age, but as I said above, it depends on whether or not they were accurately measured or self-reported, measured properly with a full erection, what Tanner stages the guys were at when they were measured, etc. Without knowing all of that information those numbers are meaningless.

Finally, don't spend a lot of brain time worrying about this. At 14 you might want to impress the guys in the shower with a **** down to your knees, but I guarantee you that 10 years from now you won't care less about what the guys think. (Unless you're gay, of course, which is perfectly OK). The point is, your adult penis will be the size it will be. There's not a thing you can do about it. (Don't believe anything on the internet that tells you differently - they're all scams). Second, the average adult vagina is 3-4 inches deep. (Ever see a tampon?) That means that a guy with a 5 inch erection has the same amount in there during sex as a guy with a 9 inch wonder weiner.

I hope I've helped. Feel free to post any other questions or email me if you feel more comfortable not going public with your question (I prefer that you post because there are a million other guys out there with the same questions you have).
