Has anyone had plates removed following jaw surgery?

I had upper and lower jaw surgery in November 2008. I can feel 2 bumps either side of my nose where the plates are and the right one is somewhat uncomfortable when I wear glasses or swimming goggles. Sometimes my right nostril suddenly starts dripping even when I don't have a cold and I wonder if the plate is a cause.  I was wondering about having the plates removed but wondered how bad the bruising etc will be and if there are likely to be any unforseen (by me) consequences.  Any help and advice appreciated.
