Tmj-hypercausis-tension headache correlation??

I'm 21, was diagnosed with tmj at 17. Had a personalized mouth guard I used every night. As of sept 2011, had a "flare up" everyday horrible facial pain, head pain and pressure, neck pain and weakness, throbbing, saw a tmj "specialist" who said not to wear mouth guard any more so I don't yet said there's nothing he can do for me. Pain increases come Dec, vertigo occurs, chiropractor relieves 85% of it. Had blood test, chest x-ray, CT scan, Mri of neck all normal- neurologist just diagnosed me with tension headaches-prescribed me topamax and and anti-inflamatory. Waiting to take a hearing test from the ENT who believes I have a vitamin B diffiency which is why I'm hearing everything loud for the past 3 weeks... I'm no rocket scientist but wouldn't all these things actually be related??? I'm goin crazy with symptoms! Pain relief through pills though-Amen! Please help!!

Hey girl,
Just weighing in on how your tmj is treating you?
Your symptoms are A LOT like mine. I have had tmj since I was 16 with no real effects aside the odd lock. I did physio and forgot about it until one night in January this year, I couldn't sleep due to facial pain. Totally screwy. I had shoulder and neck and even throat pain that sometimes was just PULSING. Ever since i've done a battery of tests as well and everything keeps coming back to TMfriggingJ. Dizziness, nausea, headaches, toothaches, sensation of a sore throat. The whole shabang.
I have no desire to change careers, I'm a pastry chef and die for it. But here are some tips that have been helping me along:
meditate. practice keeping your jaw relaxed every moment you can think of it. Rub a535, like recommended above. Behind your ears there is a connecting point of just one of the many effected muscles. and a HUGE one: YOGA! stretch the crap out of yourself, loosen up and keep a clear mind. Also, diet can help. Aside the usual "don't eat chewy crap", there are other foods that are known to "trigger" the onset of pain. This can include dairy, chocolate, wheat, and a few others too.
Also, try to keep a positive outlook. It's easy for it to get you down but there's nowhere to go but up.
Cheers

I've been researching and the closest thing I can relate to is fibromyalgia, however, my pain isn't necessarily widespread. There are days my legs hurt for no reason. But everyday, my pain is shoulders and up. So i don't know. Seeing the neurologist again today lol Thanks for all your help! I'll suggest this cream to him

I think if you were careful not to touch your face you could put it in front of your ears. I wouldn't put it on your cheeks though. Way too close to the eyes. I am always playing with my hair or otherwise touching my face so that is why I don't use it on the front of my ears.

I am sorry you are having strange symptoms. Sometimes the wiring of the brain goes awry and creates strange things. I have fibromyalgia and it can cause a lot of problems with no known reason. I hope you can find a cause and it is fixable.

well I'm not sure if I qualify for surgery, structurally I'm normal, just in a lot of pain and never feel right. I have never ending symptoms that continue to change and now they are affecting my senses (sensitive hearing and also sensitive to lights- cell phone in the dark ill see crazy flashes for at least 5 minutes afterwards)

As for this rub cream, i have most of my pain in front of my ears, and my check bones, still apply it behind my ears?  I'm very interested in using this!

Thanks for all your help!

I would challenge what the TMJ doctor said about the mouth guard. A mouth guard keeps the joints slightly open which means when you grind your teeth you do less damage. I've been through the mill TMJ wise (10.5 hour long surgery to repair both joints), and I know that I would not, ever, be without a mouth guard. I get extra sensitive hearing from my TMJ problems. It was much worse before surgery but I still feel like things are rather loud.

If it is TMJ pain one thing they can do is inject steroids and anti-inflamatories directly into the joint. Some do it while you are awake - however mine would always sedate me. He did it right in the surgical suite of the office. It was really quick although it takes about an hour to wake up from being put under.

You can only do it once every six months because otherwise it can cause the bone to deteriorate. You wake up and it hurts like a bugger. It burns. But the next day you start to notice the difference and it lasts for a few months. An oral and maxilliofacial surgeon would do it. Before you waste your money on someone who just pulls wisdom teeth, ask the receptionist if they do joint replacements. If they do joint replacements than they should know about TMJ treatments.

Another thing you may want to try for pain relief is Natural Source Rub A535 Capsaicin Arthritis Cream. You rub it behind your ears. You don't want to rub it in front of your ears because capsaicin is a derivitive of hot pepper and if it gets in your eyes or on your lips it is quite painful. It helped me more than a tylenol with codeine. It works better the more you use it, so I use it three times a day. They say you can use it up to 4 times a day. It costs about $18. Regular A535 won't work. It has to have Capsaicin in it. The other thing is to take 1500mg of Glucosamine with Choindroitin a day. It has been proven to be as effective as ibuprofen and increases the fluid in the joint space. Now you have to be patient as it takes a month to six weeks to work.
