eminectomy

I am 17 year old student and I have recurrent jaw dislocation. My consultant has offered me surgery, an eminectomy. I don't know whether to take the surgery because I am scared about the fact that there could be nerve damage. I also play the cornet (like a trumpet), if i have the surgery will it affect me play it? Is the surgery really worth it? Does any one know what the chance is of getting nerve damage? How long is recovery?
