is there any treatment?

by psychosomatic, Feb 22, 2008 09:10PM
i have tmj.   my mother always told me not to click my jaw, but i did anyway cuz i thought it was cool.... so now (i think i would have developed, anyway, right?) i have extremely bad tmj.  i can barely open my mouth when it's cold out and i'm shivering because of the tension in my muscles, and it's on both sides of my jaw.  my ortho and dentist said that surgery wouldn't help because of maybe the severity? i forget.  and those little mouth 'wafers' they gave me don't help.  hot and cold compresses, don't help.  massaging is only temporary relief.    also, i grind my teeth at night, which really doesn't help, and lately i've been catching myself grinding my teeth during the day.    IS THERE ANY RELIEF FROM TMJ??  what can i do?   it's so bad.  i'm in pain everyday now and i don't want to live with this forever!  and the headaches it causes.... unbearable.  nothing i do or take makes them go away.   :(

Dear psychosomatic:
Applying cold spray or ice cold can along the masseter muscles bilaterally, then open your jaw. This maneuver can facilitate stresching masseter muscles. Then warm up masster muscles. Repeat the procedure again. 3-5 times stretch can temporarrily relieve your muscle problems. The long term treatment reruires a well made occlusal appliance or occlusal equilibration. Occlusal treatment is very effective for tmj associated problems. However, you need to find a highly competent dentist to do the job. Not all dentists can deliver effective treatment. Good luck
