I 'm not sure what the protocal is on this web sight for recomending Dr.s but I can tell you about my experience with my surgeon.  I' m a 58 yr old female & live in Michigan near Flint and in 2005 was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism ( too much calcium in blood) I under went ultra sound of the thyroid, a bone scan, the radio active dye test and a biopsey. I had noduales non-cancerous on my throid gland. In Aug 2006 I had all of my thyroid and 3 of my parathyroid gands removed due to tumors. One of my parathyroid glands was way down in my thymus gland from birth. My surgeon took over 4 hrs for a surgery that normally takes about 1 !/2 hrs to insure that I would have at least 1 parathyroid gland. I do have some of the symptoms of hypocalcemia now. Just a tingle every once in a while and only have to take 1200 mg of calcium with vitamin d and magnesium. My parathyroid is working as I'm producing pth hormone.  My Dr is an MD and is very well known for his expertise.  His name is Dr. Sukamal Saha 3500 Calkins Rd. Flint, Mi 810-230-9600. I would highly recommend him from my own personal experience. Hope you find someone to help you I know this condition is very stressful. Good luck to you.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Minimally invasive surgery is preferred and curative in about 90-95% of cases.  Risks of surgery in this area of the body mainly include damage to nerve to vocal cords.  Would talk to your endocrinologists about specific surgeons.  In addition to the website you mentioned, many academic centers may offer this service.

Dr. Prinz is at Rush Hodpital in Chicago.  I can HIGHLY reccommend him.  He is running clinical trials to learn more about hyperparathyroidism.  He is a great guy. Website:

There are two doctors at Northwestern who also do the surgery.  I have not met with them so I cannot reccommend them, but I have heard good things.
